Diagnostic Study of Nikahnama: Assessing Women’s Marriage Rights in Punjab

This study undertakes a diagnostic analysis of nikkahnamas to evaluate the implementation of women’s marriage rights in Punjab. Drawing on a sample of 1,100 nikkahnamas from Lahore and Pakpattan, alongside surveys and interviews with Nikkah Registrars and Union Council officials, the report identifies persistent gaps: child marriages solemnized in contravention of the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Act, delayed or missing registration of nikkahnamas, limited legal knowledge among registrars, and the frequent omission of columns addressing dower, delegated right to divorce, special conditions, and maintenance.
