Tahira Sultana: A Landmark Decision on Women’s Property Rights

NCHR supported Ms. Tahira Sultana, a widow who fought for over five decades to secure her rightful inheritance. Despite multiple civil court proceedings, appeals, and revisions reaching the Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court of Pakistan, her property share remained unrealized. In August 2023, the Ombudsperson Punjab, under the Punjab Enforcement of Women’s Property Rights Act 2021, ruled in her favor, directing the Deputy Commissioner, Lahore, to enforce the decision. The case stands as a powerful testament to the systemic barriers women face in accessing inheritance and the critical role of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in delivering justice.
